Auspious Dates in the Month of the Hungry Ghosts
We have just entered the seventh month (Aug 7 – Sept.7) of the Chinese year, known as the month of the “Hungry Ghosts.” It is seen as the lowest point of the year. During this time, the gates of the lower realms are opened and the hungry ghosts are free to roam the earth in search of food, entertainment and mischief. This seems to be an accurate portrayal of the current state of both national and world affairs.
Celebrating the Hungry Ghost Festival is all about looking after hungry, discontented, wandering souls. These are ghosts without families to care for them or people who died because of unfortunate events like war, murder or suicide. With the number of disaffected people in the living world today, this theme should resonate with us.
During the Ghost Month, families do everything they can to placate these unhappy spirits with gifts of food, money and other supplies. Though primarily intended to prevent these ghosts from causing trouble in their own lives, the customs of Ghost Month do raise a certain mindfulness about making space in our worlds for those who have fallen out of society. This year the actual festival falls on Aug. 25th.
Since this is the lowest point of the year, I decided to list the Auspicious dates in August using the system of the famous Ming dynasty astrologer, Master Dong Gong, who wrote what is considered the foremost classical text on the subject of date selection. The only problem is that it was only in Chinese. But now, thanks to Joey Yap, there is an English translation of the original text.
The following dates are not auspicious dates for you if your Chinese astrological animal clashes with the animal ruling the day. Below are the animals listed with their conflicting signs. So for example, if you are a tiger, the monkey dates are not good for you!

12 August – Fire Rat
Hiring long term employees, signing long term agreement, seeking medical treatment, getting married, opening business, commencing construction, buying a pet, house warming, planting. Proposing marriage, renovation, burial, ground breaking, moving house, traveling.
15 August -Earth Rabbit
Relaxing, religious activities, ground breaking, bed positioning. Open business, travel, ground breaking, construction, appointing new officer. Increase in wealth, birth of noble children.
19 August – Water Sheep
Closing business, resigning from a job, retirement day, erecting a memorial stone. Renovation, moving house.
20 August – Wood Monkey
Getting engaged, proposing marriage, starting school, starting higher education, enroll for a course, seek medical advice, starting a new job, taking up a new job position, negotiations, sending invites to business prospects on social media, growing your business network, business meetings, business traveling, business deals, construction, trading. Burial.
21 August – Wood Rooster
Burial, cleaning, cleansing, demolition work, repairs, medical procedure, ending an abusive relationship, starting clearance sale, starting a diet. Landscaping, quarrying, traveling, moving house, opening a business, groundbreaking, construction, migrating.
24 August – Earth Rat
Hiring long term employees, signing long term agreement, seeking medical treatment, getting married, opening business, commencing construction, buying a pet, house warming, planting. Proposing marriage, renovation, burial, moving house, traveling, ground breaking.
27 August – Metal Rabbit
Relaxing, religious activities, ground breaking, bed positioning. Open business, travel, ground breaking, construction, appointing new officer. Increase in wealth, birth of noble children.
30 August -Wood Horse
Business opening, house warming, starting a new job, taking up a new job position, starting school/higher education, enrolling for a course, signing agreements, getting married, business deals, starting a project. Proposing marriage, renovation, burial, traveling, moving house. Wealth increase 60 –120 days. Help from noble people1 Do something on this day to create future wealth!
