Most people think of the i Ching as a divination tool, but it is definitely much more than that. The ageless wisdom of the I Ching is also the basis of numerous ancient philosophies and disciplines, including the many schools of Feng Shui, and Chinese astrology. Translated as the “Book of Changes,” it emerged in China at least five thousand years ago. It’s author is considered to be Fu Hsi, a mythical figure, who studied “the patterns of nature in the sky, on the earth, the markings on birds, rocks, animals, and the movement of clouds and stars.” He discovered that everything in creation could be reduced to eight trigrams, each composed of three stacked solid or broken lines, The eight trigrams of yin (broken line) and yang (solid line) represented; heaven, fire,  thunder, wind, water, earth, a mountain, and a lake.

The Book of Changes was used mostly for predicting natural events until King Wen wrote the first expositions on the sixty four hexagrams about 5,000 years ago. He found that the eight trigrams, when doubled, became sixty-four six-lined hexagrams that more completely expressed the basic rhythms and laws of Universe.

Through the years, many of the most famous men in the world have relied on the ageless wisdom of the i Ching. On his deathbed, Confucius, expressed his wish that he could live another 50 years so that he could devote more time to studying the I Ching. Inspired by the mathematical structure of the I Ching, the German philosopher and mathematician Leibniz invented the binary system, which was a major contribution to computer science, and resulted in the fact that you are at this very moment reading this sentence. Carl Jung was also fascinated by the I Ching, and proposed “synchronicity” as the mechanism by which one’s mind, and the hexagrams become interconnected.

Martin Schönberger, a German, scientist who wrote the book, The I Ching & the Genetic Code, discovered that both the i Ching and our genetic code not only use the same alphabet, they actually speak the same language! The way the amino acids are formed and combined to create the helix spiral of our DNA parallels the mathematical combinations required to create the six lined hexagrams of the I Ching. These combinations create blueprints that allow us to make analogies and create metaphors using symbols, letters, and numbers which represent objects, ideas, relationships and nature.

The I Ching represents an entire ancient philosophy that should be treated with great respect and admiration. It symbolizes the cyclical interconnectedness of the Universe and it serves as a moral guide to a personal path of balance and harmony. The wisdom this book contains has the potential to stimulate your sensitivity, creativity and resourcefulness, even when you are experiencing the most challenging and demanding periods of  your life. Most importantly, the I Ching does not give you specific and straight-to-the point ‘answers’ you might expect. Instead, it empowers you and encourages you to look within for the answer that you seek. Its mysticism as a divination system is, paradoxically, founded on its emphasis on the   phenomenal nature of human beings.

Below is the chart of the Chinese animals and elements in English. In the chart above there are four signs which have two hexagrams. There are 64 hexagrams and only 60 element/animals combinations – when the 12  animal signs are paired with each of the 5 elements the total is 60 . The four  with double hexagrams are Jia zi, Geng yin, Jia wu and Geng shen. The four are  listed in the following chart. If you are lucky enough to have two hexagrams,  try to figure out which one is more accurate.

table 3

1.  Stand in front of the structure with your back to the front (the front is the direction the structure looks out on the world) this is not necessarily the front  door! You enter from the back or side of most apartments and condos and  walk to the living area. So you would take your compass reading facing out the  front window or balcony,

2.  Have a compass – your phone has one if you don’t have a regular compass. Take a compass reading by holding the compass or phone flat in front of you.

3.  Take note of the compass degrees and find them in the chart below. For example, if your compass reading says 88 degrees – your iChing reading would  be hexagram 13 and the name would be Seeking Harmony. You can go online to find many interpretations of the iChing hexagrams.

4.  Of course there are always a few exceptions! The four with double hexagrams are – the wood rat 354.4 – 5.6 degrees, the metal tiger from 73.1 – 84.4 degrees, the wood horse from 174 – 185.6 degrees, and the metal monkey from 253.1 – 264.4. The reason for this is there are 64 hexagrams and only 60 element/animal combinations.

5.  If you know your element/animal combination you can find your personal hexagram also. For example, I am a yang wood monkey so my hexagram is  number 64.
